With a lifetime of involvement in boxing, Puerto Rican born Juan Arroyo moved to Miami at the age of 3. His rough roots in Miami led him to become involved with boxing by the age of 13, yet his natural talent for the sport enabled Juan to turn professional at the mere age of 16. Juan was taught by Jose 'Caron' Gonzalez and Luis Sarria (both in the Boxing Hall of Fame - trainers of Mohammad Ali at the infamous 5th St Gym, Miami) By the age of 19, Juan won the Florida Lightweight Title by beating Johnny Torres. His amateur
record of 35 wins and 8 losses led him to participate in the Junior Olympics and he won the
Golden Gloves in 1980. Juan later traveled with Boxing Hall of Fame Historian Hank Kaplan and
legend Roberto Duran to England, with Frank Maloney (UK boxing promoter) and Nigel Benn in 1988. During 1993 the
City Miami awarded a certificate for A Key to the City of Miami on April 23rd. TV, radio, and newspapers bought Arroyo's boxing events to the public including ESPN, Telemundo, USA network, New
Times, Miami Herald, The Ring, Sol 95.
